I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

A General Education course. Topics include truth and proof in mathematics, statistics and probability, and modeling. This course is designed to serve non-science and non-business majors in fulfilling their Gordon Rule mathematics requirement. 

 

 

II. COURSE REQUIREMENTS & CONTENT:

Calculator Policy:

  • There should be no necessity to use a calculator for any of the computations required in this course.

Students will be using www.jasonchaos.org to access course syllabus, specific required readings, etc. Please check the course website regularly for updated assignments, readings, and notifications.

Assignments: Students will be given regular homework assignments.  Homework problems will be discussed in class and will appear on quizzes and exams.

 

In-class Quizzes: There will be 6 in-class quizzes throughout the semester. These will be given in hard copy (not digital) form. These will be short and will not take more than the first five to ten minutes of class. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. If a student is absent without excuse, they forfeit their participation in a quiz. If a student is absent with dean’s excuse, they must arrange an alternate time to take the quiz with the professor.

 

Midterm Examination: There will be one Midterm Examination. The date of this exam will be listed on your course calendar given on the calendar page. Please take note of it. This exam will contain a combination of multiple choice and short answer. The exam will be scheduled outside of normal class time in the architecture computer lab. If a student is absent without excuse, they forfeit their participation in the midterm examination. If a student is absent with dean’s excuse, they must arrange an alternate time to take the quiz with the professor.

 

Final Examination: There will be a Final Examination. This exam is not cumulative. This exam will contain a combination of multiple choice and short answer. The cumulative final exam date and time will be posted on the course calendar. Make note of this. Alternative examinations times are not permissible.

 

You have exactly one week once your quizzes/examinations have been returned to you to discuss that grade. After that week, the grade is final. The course will be graded out of 100 points and your lowest quiz score will be dropped.

 

III. CONDUCT & CLASS POLICIES:

 

Classroom Behavior:

Student Code of Conduct: The aim of education is the intellectual, personal, social, and ethical development of the individual. The educational process is ideally conducted in an environment that encourages reasoned discourse, intellectual honesty, openness to constructive change and respect for the rights of individuals. Self-discipline and a respect for the right of others in the university community are necessary for the fulfillment of such goals.

 

Code of Academic Integrity: Integrity is expected of every student in all academic work. The guiding principle of academic integrity is that a student’s submitted work must be the student’s own. This principle is furthered by the student Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedures.

 

Policy on Threatening Behavior: Threatening behavior will not be tolerated in class or on the university campus. The University seeks to promote a safe environment where students and employees may participate in the educational process without compromising their health, safety or welfare.

 

Attendance, Punctuality, & Absence Policies:

Excused Absences:

  • All holidays or special events observed by organized religions will be honored for students affiliated with the particular religion.

  • Absences pre-approved by the UF Dean of Students or designee will be honored.

 

NOTE: In any case of misconduct related to classroom behavior or punctuality, the instructor reserves the right to dismiss a student from the classroom at any time without warning.

 

Grading Policies:

  • An incomplete will be given only for documented (in most cases, medical-related) emergencies. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior approval.

  • Grading Scale:

    • A [90-100]; A- [87-89]

    • B+ [83-86]; B [80-82]; B- [77 - 79]

    • C+ [73-76]; C [68-72]

    • D [60-67]

    • E [0-59].  

 

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is illegal and will result in receiving a failing grade of E for the course and the student will be notified of the dean of his or her college. Please see the university Code of Academic Integrity (listed above) for more details.

 

Accommodations:

Students registered with the Disability Resource Center need to submit documentation for reasonable accommodations. Accommodation are required by your instructor only if given through the Disability Resource Center. Any other accommodations that you may request are granted only at your instructor’s discretion.
